Die 25-jährige Gefängnisinsassin Kathi erhält am Geburtstag ihres Sohnes Freigang aus einer Wiener Justizanstalt. Sie findet ihren Sohn, der bei ihrer überforderten Mutter in einer kleinen Wohnung lebt, in verwahrlostem Zustand vor. Der Tag entwickelt sich zur Tour de Force und Kathi muss am frühen Abend in die Haftanstalt zurückkehren. Sie ist gezwungen bis dahin eine neue Bleibe für ihren Sohn zu finden und wird dabei immer öfter mit ihrer Vergangenheit konfrontiert. Es entsteht ein Wettlauf gegen die Zeit und ein Ringen mit persönlichen Bedürfnissen.
