Paul Dood (Tom Meeten) is an aspiring dreamer in an apathetic world. While working in a second-hand store, he has first-hand dreams of showing the world his talents on a nationally syndicated show. As Paul and his ailing mother begin a journey across town, for his audition, five individuals callously prevent him from his big moment. Paul snaps and, during one wonderfully and questionably murderous lunch break, takes revenge for himself and all others who are bullied by a cruel society.
This dark oddball comedy is often described as a cross-between Ingrid Goes West and Joker; with an affable loner and reluctant antihero at its center. The jokes and gore play well with the glittering costumes and kill count, but the depth of the film lies in its commentary on our obsession for fame; in the form of social-media likes and views. Director Nick Gillespie co-wrote the screenplay for Paul Dood’s Deadly Lunch Break which won the Screenwriter’s Award at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. – Nate Ashley
