Insular follows the sole survivor of an illegal yola (boat) trip from the Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico. As time passes, the castaway (Alexis Díaz de Villegas) learns to cope with his isolation by making ends meet with what the island provides. However, as his sanity is tested and the lines of reality increasingly blur, an unexpected turn makes him question his initial reason for leaving. Insular is based on the short story “La Isla” by Dominican author Luis Martin Gómez which delves into illegal migration and questions the validity of the American dream through the point of view of a university professor who risks everything to embark on one of these clandestine trips hoping for a better life.

Insular is the last performance of one of the most beloved actors of Cuban cinema and theater,
