Figures from archival films from the 1950s are recast in a large-scale secret operation that veers bizarrely off course. The film reflects on current and troubled relationships between the areas of national security, civil liberties and telephone companies. Voice on the Line explores how technology can be used to shape our fears, desires and how we feel connected. "This was the second CUFF I attended and was dazzled. I stayed at Jodie Mack's place. We stayed out late at CUFF parties and danced. I met lots of excellent filmmakers, took photobooth photos after film screenings, and rode bikes. Voice on the Line

The artist fights for her voice in a world that doesn’t want her to speak. She risks her work being dismissed and herself declared “complicated”, “uncertain” or “irrelevant” unless she can define herself within a certain category. Only when her work is validated by a male authority does the work gain notice. "The Q&amp;A for Artist Statement at CUFF was one of the strangest and best I’ve had. The film arose from the frustration of making work that doesn’t fit neatly into a box. I can’t remember what prompted it, but in the Q&amp;A I said that historically the inability to categorize a female filmmaker’s work was used as a reason to dismiss her, while a male filmmaker would tend to be praised for his range. I hadn’t meant to say something quite so blunt and I had an out of body experience as the theater went silent. Bryan finally said, “well there you have it,” or something similar and the room reanimated. The audience response was actually favorable and I had wonderful conversations in the bar as a result." - Shayna Connelly

Artist Statement

This short film is based on an incident that took place in Israel in 2010. When Noam Chomsky was invited to give a talk in Birzeit University near Ramallah, he was identified with the radical left by the Israeli border control officials, denied entry to Israel, and sent to Jordan. Shortly after the incident, Dana Weiss from the Israeli Channel 2 met with him at a hotel lobby in Amman for a 40 minute interview. During the interview, deep ideological tensions between Chomsky and Weiss surfaced. In this work, the interview language is cut apart into individual words, and then recomposed into a new monolog told by an invisible, third character. The character’s speech reference’s Chomsky’s linguistic theory. "CUFF 2015 was actually the&nbsp;first film festival I screened at. I must have been really nervous because I have no recollection of my film screening, or of the Q &amp; A for that matter... I do have amazing&nbsp;memories of the other shorts programs. Taking a day trip with the festival participants and staff to Lagunitas, and chatting over beer and pretzels. And just&nbsp;the depth and breadth of works which I got to experience over the course of the festival. It was a special experience." - Orr Menirom
