VAlPI

A portrait of my brother Uriah becomes a sci-fi fantasy about queerness, alienation, and disability. Using reenactment to address the problematic, it proposes a way of healing and moving forward out of a present moment of rejection, into radical acceptance. "About ten minutes into shooting, my siblings decided they didn't want to make a movie anymore. I had to placate them with Cheetos and donuts. Even with snacks, total insurgency ensued after about two hours. I thought the shoot was a failure until I showed the footage to someone a month later. Then I realized that a movie can be as simple as a document of failing." -Stephen Wardell

Uriah Plays the Alien

While cooking a family recipe, a woman struggles to recall clear memories of its origins. "All photos used in the film were pulled from family visits, taken independently from this project. Older photos were taken in the mid90s by the filmmaker's father; newer photos were taken by the filmmaker's mother in 2019." - Andrea Oranday

The Transect follows a pair of ecologists in Hawai’i tracking the Ope’ape’a bat, an endangered species about which little is known. Along the way, their investigation reveals what is lost and gained in the layers of translation between species, between disciplines, between partners, between languages and cultures. "Before landing on the story of the Ope’ape’a bat, Andy followed Kim and Forest Starr on field work recording Hawaiian petrels, picking fireweed caterpillars, and discovering over twenty new species of moth. Their work on Haleakala brought them close to the telescopes on the mountain’s summit and inspired Andy’s next work, A*, about the Event Horizon Telescope project." - Andy Graydon
