“The Atom: A Love Affair takes no sides, and pulls no punches in its witty and admirably objective archival account of the West’s relationship with nuclear power” — New Scientist

The energy and climate crises are heralding a push for a 'new nuclear' renaissance. PCS is opposed to nuclear power and weapons as a dangerous distraction to the renewables and just energy transition urgently needed. The union is pleased to be able to offer PCS members the opportunity to watch this groundbreaking film which provides an objective history of the nuclear 'love affair' story. This will be followed with a panel discussion with the film's Director Vicki Lesley, PCS Assistant General Secretary John Moloney, and Kate Hudson, General Secretary of CND which will provide an opportunity to put questions and build our collective anti-nuclear campaigning.

Behind-the-scenes political drama meets sentimental screen romance in this sweeping international feature documentary, delving deep into the past of the world’s most controversial energy source. With gems from the archives, a lush romantic score and a warm and playful tone, the film charts the West’s rollercoaster love-hate relationship with nuclear power over the past 75 years. It’s a dramatic tale of belief, betrayal, intrigue and hope, and it’s told by the scientists, engineers, politicians and campaigners who experienced it first hand.
