Co-presented with the Carnegie Institution for Science
Includes a pre-recorded panel discussion featuring Diana Kushner and Stephen Smith (Co-directors, Beneath the Polar Sun), Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D, Rhode Island), and Amanda Lynch (Sloan And George Lindeman Jr. Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies, Brown University).
Five hundred nautical miles from the North Pole, inside the Arctic Ocean’s “Last Ice Area”, a research team has set out to measure the world’s largest and oldest sea ice floes. Steve is an expedition leader who has led projects in the High Arctic for 40 years. Chris is a polar oceanographer who studies ice floes from a Harvard lab. They know the data, the models, the science. None of that has prepared them for the truth on the ground. The floes around them are crumbling, collapsing - jumbled slabs of sea ice closing in from every corner. There is no way forward, there is no way back, they are tiny specks in the Arctic wilderness. Caught in a frozen maelstrom, something has to give.
