ARCTIC ALCHEMY follows renowned Alaskan adventurer and climate scientist Roman Dial and his team on a 112-mile research expedition above the Arctic Circle. Traveling by packraft and foot through Alaska’s mighty Brooks Range, their goal is to find the source of a mysterious phenomenon poisoning watersheds in the Arctic. Along the journey, Roman reckons with fatherhood, personal tragedy, and the power of wilderness to both break us and bring us fully alive. Through expansive aerial cinematography, archival photography, and rare access to Roman’s field expeditions, the film provides a window into a lifetime of discovery and legendary backcountry pursuits. As the Alaskan Arctic rapidly changes, Roman seeks to pass the torch to his students, in hopes that they carry on his unique style of expeditionary climate research. The documentary explores the power of one of the planet’s last great expanses and the wild alchemy of transforming grief into love.

As commodification and extractivism in the Amazon Rainforest extends to the plant medicine hayakwaska, the granddaughter of a Yachak (shaman) reveals the essence of what it means to live as part of the forest. Nina Gualinga of the Kichwa People of Sarayaku, speaks with the memory of her Apayaya (grandfather) about the ongoing cultural appropriation, environmental destruction, and marginalization of Indigenous Peoples, questioning our very relationship to earth and the quest for healing.

Swapping the weight of a gun for the promise of a camera, McKenzie captures city pigeons and rats as well as elusive panthers. A rare gem in the predominantly white canvas of wildlife photography, McKenzie is empowering kids of color to shift their gaze to conservation.

Walking the Fringe explores the ecotone of the Sierra Foothills through the senses of three land stewards. In California, 90% of the open space is made up of natural and working landscapes, tended mostly by farmers and ranchers. Influencing how those lands are conserved and restored can have a huge impact. Can blending Western and Indigenous knowledges be the answer?
