OK/NOTOK is a genre-bending love story set in the very near future with a darkly comic edge. Loretta, a working-class British Asian woman, attempts to navigate a turbulent world, a new stranger in her life, and unskippable adverts. The film plays like “science fiction Mike Leigh” in that it goes against the grain and rewards you on rewatches. It’s stylistically bold in its simplicity but is enriched with depth and emotionally compelling performances that invite you to lean forward. Told from the perspective of a working-class British Asian woman, the film depicts a future that could be just years away but also speaks about the state of our world today. In making it, the film revealed to me what it was really about, and that was tolerance. A story about who we shut out and through understanding, who we let into our weird little worlds. The film was made with a deep love of cinema and the joy of expressing ideas in unconventional ways.
