URBAN SPHINX is an animated short film that creatively documents the presence of street art at various neighbourhoods of Valencia, Spain, between 2018 y 2019. In URBAN SPHINX these pieces of ephemeral art are connected like the frames of a film. All these faces look at us with widely opened eyes, as if they tell us that we exist, but we might not exist —and the world would go on.

In the late 1970’s, when L.A.’s punk rock scene was exploding, an unlikely family-owned restaurant in Little Tokyo started by Japanese Americans returning from America’s WWII concentration camps, became one its most popular hang-outs. That’s when Sansei “Atomic Nancy” with her “take-no-prisoners” punk make-up and demeanor took the café over from her parents and cranked up the jukebox. Infamous for its eclectic clientele – from Japanese American locals and kids from East L.A. to yakuza and the biggest rock stars of the day - the Atomic Café became an important part of L.A.’s punk rock history.

Jonathan is out of place in his middle-class London drama school. Pigeonholed for a role as a Black hoodlum in a classmate’s play and coaxed by his teacher to take the typecast part, Jonathan decides to demonstrate to his peers their prejudices, during a class role play exercise. Play it Safe is a story about implicit bias: unconscious racism by those who think of themselves as above prejudice, but whose conditioned racism is just as impactful as those who wear their intolerance proudly. Jonathan’s realisation that he is not in a liberal safe-space, but that his seemingly well-intended classmates hold entrenched stereotypes, reflects the real stories of countless drama students across the UK.
