A personal, visual essay about gender transition – focusing on the social context and implications and exploring how the world is different living as female compared to being perceived as male.

Jack tells his story by using and reframing gender-focused tropes and imagery from popular culture, mythology, history, and art.

Created as part of the Scottish Documentary Institute's Bridging the Gap program.

Director’s Statement:

Everyman is a stylized visual essay in which I talk about the social side of my transition going from living as female to being perceived as male. As trans people, we have the unique perspective of seeing the world from both sides of the gender spectrum and seeing the inequalities that come with it. Trans lives are very topical at the moment but often spoken about in a way that’s very divisive. The story I wanted to tell is much more uniting. It’s a conversation about gender that includes everyone.
