After her husband is assaulted in an Anti-Asian hate crime, a timid but resilient Korean-American senior is empowered to fight back when she discovers viral face-slapping competition videos.
Director - David Au
With the dramatic rise of anti-Asian hate crimes happening around the country since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, it has become impossible for me as a Chinese-American filmmaker to turn a blind eye to such horrific tragedies. The senseless violence, discrimination and even simple coldness directed towards Asian people of all nationalities has inspired me to create a story that encapsulates the frustration and anger a lot of Asian-Americans feel today.
June is a character dedicated to all our mothers, aunties and grandmothers who are fearful for their lives at the moment. We hope by presenting this film to the public, we can show the world these people aren’t just victims, and sometimes the strongest acts come from the most unassuming people.
