Mina Laamon Surunkesyttäjät on episodimainen dokumenttielokuva ihmisistä, jotka ovat päättäneet kohdata surun väistämättä tai pakenematta. Se kertoo niin rakkaansa menettäneistä, ulkopuolelle jääneistä kuin oman rajallisuutensa kohtaamaan joutuneistakin. Elokuva kysyy: voiko surusta päästä yli? Filmille kuvattu dokumentti on murrettujen sävyjen ja mustavalkoisten otosten muodostama unenomainen kudelma, joka johdattaa katsojansa lempeästi läpi vaikean aiheen. Elokuvan ihmisten ja heidän kertomustensa kautta piirtyvä tarina on matka surun eri vaiheista kasvamiseen ja surusta vapautumiseen. Dokumentin ote teemaansa on inhimillinen ja kaunis. Se suhtautuu pelättyyn tunteeseen kuin ystävään. Se myös korostaa, ettei ole yhtä oikeaa tapaa surra, vaan tapoja on yhtä monta kuin ihmisiäkin. Mina Laamo’s Sorrow Tamers is an episodic documentary about people who have decided to face sorrow without trying to avoid it or run away from it. They are people who have lost loved ones, who have become outcasts, or who are struggling with their own shortcomings. But is it possible to overcome sorrow? Shot on film, the documentary is woven together with scenes of black and white as well as muted tones, forming a dreamlike composition that guides the viewer gently through a difficult subject. Told through people’s own experiences, it is a journey through different stages of grief towards personal growth and liberation from sorrow. The documentary approaches the theme softly and gracefully. Instead of fearing sorrow, it welcomes it. It emphasizes that there is no one right way to grieve; everyone experiences grief in their own way. But while sorrow alters a person, it should not define them. Sorrow Tamers has a strong message: sorrow touches each of us in one way or another. But sorrow should not be feared or avoided. Only by daring to confront it can one learn to live with it and grow stronger. After all, we need grief in order to appreciate the things that are important to us in our lives.
