”Tämä ei ole yksi tarina, niitä on monta”, lausuu kertoja kuvaavasti Matteo Tortonen ensimmäisen soolo-ohjaustyön alussa. Mother Lode sijoittuu Peruun, ja italialaisohjaaja sekoittaa taidokkaasti fiktiota ja dokumenttia tarkastellessaan perulaisen työväenluokan ahdinkoa yhden yksilön kautta. Käsikirjoitus perustuu pääosanesittäjä José Luis Nazario Camposin tosielämän kokemuksiin.

Jorge toimii Limassa mopotaksikuskina, mutta ajopelin sanouduttua irti hän joutuu etsimään uutta työtä elättääkseen vaimonsa ja pienen lapsensa. Hän päätyy matkaamaan kaivostyöläiseksi La Rinconadaan, maapallon korkeimpaan pysyvästi asutettuun paikkaan 5100 metriä merenpinnan yläpuolella. Äärimmäisen karuissa, hyisissä olosuhteissa vuoristotautia lääkitään kolapähkinöillä ja kaikkea muuta alkoholilla.

Ohjaaja Tortone on kuvannut maiseman olevan ”kuin kuun pinta, täydellinen ilmaisemaan nykyhetken ja iäisyyden välistä linkkiä”. Upeissa pitkissä otoissa viipyilevän kameran mustavalkokuvien imussa aika hidastuu, ja tarinan myyttinen, sisyfoslainen ulottuvuus nousee esiin. Sukellettaessa kaivostyöläisten kanssa maankuoren ytimeen todellisuuden raja hämärtyy – mainarit sanovat kullan kuuluvan Paholaiselle, joka vaatii tuon tuosta uhreja. Yksi jos toinenkin päätyy uhraamaan koko elämänsä.

A black and white tone that’s both stark and pure, deep and unforgiving, is what characterises Matteo Tortone’s movie Mother Lode. It’s as deep and unforgiving, in fact, as the mines of the Peruvian Andes, to which thousands of seasonal workers travel every year in order to support their families and hold out for a bit of luck. -- The darkness of the mine is terrifying in this hybrid film, which straddles the documentary and fiction forms. Matteo Tortone’s camera dives deep down into the bowels of the mountain in the company of the miners, never leaving their side. Ivan Pisino’s music accompanies the rumbling of the rock, distant explosions. Time passes slowly in this circular story, to which there is no end, for in the darkness of a tunnel, names are forgotten.
