Kolmella nuorella naisella on intohimo: surffaus. Maassa, jossa tyttöjä naitetaan alaikäisinä vanhemmille miehille ja lapset osallistuvat vanhempiensa rinnalla perheen toimeentuloon, sen toteuttaminen ei kuitenkaan ole itsestäänselvyys. Naisen, jopa nuoren sellaisen, tulee käyttäytyä kuin nainen – eivätkä bangladeshilaiset naiset surffaa.

Bangla Surf Girls syöksyy syvälle Shoben, Ayeshan ja Suman maailmaan, henkilökohtaisten unelmien ja ulkopuolisten rajoitteiden ristituleen. Shobea yritetään lähettää ulkomaille töihin tekaistulla passilla, Ayesha vaihtaa merestä suolaiset vaatteensa vesiputouksilla, jotta hänen isänsä ei huomaisi hänen surffanneen, Suman äiti pakottaa tyttärensä kantamaan vastuun perheen rahatilanteesta. Niin kauan, kun paikalliselta surffiklubilta saa säännöllisen ruokalähetyksen, on tyttöjen harrastus vielä jotenkin siedettävissä, mutta kun klubin rahat loppuvat ja ruokalähetykset ehtyvät, joutuvat tytöt kasvotusten valintojen kanssa. Onnellisimmillaan he ovat aaltojen päällä, mutta menevätkö perhe ja sen tarpeet lopulta omien tulevaisuudensuunnitelmien edelle?

Elokuva on paitsi kertomus saavutuksista ja pettymyksistä, myös kuvaus siitä, kuinka yksi ihminen voi mahdollistaa monen muun onnen. Cox's Bazarissa tämä henkilö on valmentaja ja surffiklubin perustaja Rashed, joka suuresta vastuustaan huolimatta tietää, ettei tule aina olemaan nuorille läsnä.

For teenagers like Shobe, Suma and Ayesha, there is nothing quite like the thrill of catching a big wave. On their surfboards, for a few brief minutes at least, the weight of the world gets pulled away by the undertow. As members of the Bangladesh Surf Girls and Boys Club, the girls have not only found something they are passionate about but also something they are extremely good at. The club serves as a sanctuary from the stresses of their daily lives which, as is evident in Elizabeth D. Costa’s Bangla Surf Girls, are many. Ranging in age from 13 to 15, these girls all have big dreams of a surfing career. Unfortunately, living in the town of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, their goals are met with numerous roadblocks. The biggest being their gender. -- Bangla Surf Girls manages to offer slices of hope to each amongst the bleakness. As one would expect, the film is at its most vivid when observing the girls in their element on the water.
