In 1956, at the young age of 23, Anne Innis Dagg made an unprecedented solo journey to South Africa to become the first scientist in the world to study animal behavior in the wild on that continent. The world's first ‘giraffeologist', her research findings ultimately became the foundation for many scientists following in her footsteps. (I'm not sure previous sentence reads quite right. Is it meant to not have the word ‘her'?) Willful and determined, Dagg not only faced inflicting elements in the wild, but also at home where, as a woman, she struggled to be seen and treated as equal in the male dominated field of zoology. In The Woman Who Loves Giraffes, an older, wiser Anne takes viewers on her first expedition back to Africa where her pivotal journey began. By retracing her original steps, and with letters and stunning, original 16mm film footage (from 1956), Anne offers an intimate window into her life as a young woman, juxtaposed with a firsthand look at the devastating reality that giraffes are facing today.
