Synopsis
Kathy (Golden Globe Nominee Hong Chau), a single mother, travels with her shy eight- year-old son Cody (newcomer Lucas Jaye), to Kathy's late sister's house which they plan to clean and sell. As Kathy realizes how little she knew about her sister, Cody develops an unlikely friendship with Del (Golden Globe, Tony winner and longtime acting legend Brian Dennehy) the Korean War vet and widower who lives next door. Over the course of a summer and with Del's encouragement, Cody develops the courage to come out of his shell and, along with his mother, finds a new place to call home.
Director's Biography
ANDREW AHN (DIRECTOR) is a Korean-American filmmaker born and raised in Los Angeles. His second feature DRIVEWAYS, written by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen, produced by Symbolic Exchange, stars Brian Dennehy and Hong Chau. His first feature film SPA NIGHT premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival in US Dramatic Compe- tition. The film's lead actor Joe Seo won a Special Jury Award at the festival for Break- through Performance. The film went on to win the 2017 John Cassavetes Independent Spirit Award and was distributed by Strand Releasing. Ahn participated in the Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab, the Film Independent Screenwriting Lab, and the Film Inde- pendent Directing Lab with the project.
In 2017, Ahn directed the entire first season of the Sundance Now original show THIS CLOSE from creators Shoshannah Stern and Josh Feldman. Ahn and the other produc- ers of the show were honored with the Producers Guild of America George Sunga Me- dia Access Award. He has promoted diversity in the arts by mentoring youth filmmakers through programs like Pacific Arts Movement’s Reel Voices, Outfest’s OutSet, and the Sundance Institute's Native Filmmaker Lab. He graduated from Brown University and received an MFA in Film Directing from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts).
