The Earth provides us with life. It gives us shelter, clean air, clean water, and, critically, food. The films in this block (including Farming While Black) explore the ecological and cultural context around how societies have grown the food that we eat. Through community gardens, the public is fighting for food sovereignty in a system that has often attempted to strip them of that right. This fight exists against the backdrop of a larger agricultural system, which can be pushed toward sustainability through farmers’ actions and dedication.

The Green Revolution Will Not Be Televised follows Black and Indigenous activists and community members promoting the food sovereignty movement in North and South Minneapolis. They utilize their community gardens as spaces of safety, solidarity, and vitality while growing an abundance of food for themselves and their neighbors. Their work takes on special significance in light of the Minneapolis Police Department’s murder of George Floyd. People relied on these areas as sources of nourishment and refuge, deepening the ecological benefits that community gardens provide. Organizations like Plant-Grow-Share help these spaces survive and thrive despite the challenges of land tenureship in urban agriculture.

Bennett Olupo is a recent graduate of the Yale School of the Environment. He has discovered a passion for working in the environmental space in Minnesota. Currently, he works for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, where he coordinates community engagement and outreach regarding the cumulative impacts and air toxics rule-making process. Bennett is also involved in Minneapolis's urban agriculture and workforce development scene. His experiences traveling to Nigeria, teaching STEM courses in Los Angeles, reading liberatory literature, and engaging in community organizing enrich his work. He is eager to explore more film opportunities and apply his creativity to projects such as creating floating gardens. Bennett’s next film project is to investigate the connection between surfing and worldwide colonialism through film.
