The second feature film from multi-talented writer (his novel Nine Lives Left was published in 2014) and director, Zacharias Mavroeidis, Defunct is a droll dramedy about a world-weary thirty-something bachelor named Aris. Abandoning his hip downtown lifestyle due to some dire financial circumstances and a less than impressive business venture, Aris moves into his late grandfather’s home in a conservative Athens suburb called Papagou. His grandfather was a Greek Army veteran, and his neighbourhood is heavily populated with retired military men of various ranks. As Aris uneasily adjusts to his new (and decidedly eccentric) surroundings and neighbours, he becomes friends with Vasos, an old comrade of his grandfather. Wanting to live up to his grandfather’s legacy of heroism, but also start his life over, Aris discovers a family secret that will forever change his outlook. Abandonnant son style de vie cool au centre-ville en raison de circonstances financières difficiles et d’un projet entrepreneurial moins qu’impressionnant, Aris emménage dans la maison de son défunt grand-père dans une banlieue d’Athènes, une banlieue plutôt conservatrice nommée Papagou. Son grand-père était un vétéran de l’armée grecque et, pas surprenant, son quartier est fortement peuplé d’ancien militaires en retraite de divers rangs. Alors qu’Aris s’ajuste non sans difficulté à son nouveau (et décidément excentrique) voisinage, il se lie d’amitié avec Vasos, un vieux camarade de son grand-père. Voulant honorer l’héritage d’héroïsme de son grand-père ainsi que recommencer sa vie, Aris découvre un secret familial qui changera à jamais sa perception. Un portrait ironique et touchant d’un homme qui se réinvente, Defunct a remporté le prix du meilleur film au Festival international du film de Thessalonique de 2019.
