In the rubble and ruin of war’s aftermath, an opportunistic con man named Balász pretends to be a close friend of soldiers killed in the war and insinuate his way into their families and their bank accounts. It’s a dangerous game and gets him into such serious trouble he must flee Budapest to save his skin. When he is given shelter in a remote forest by a woman named Judit and her son, Balász’s con man trickery fades as he finds himself falling in love. Things go well in their passionate affair until Judit’s brutish husband returns home from the front. Choices now have to be made, not only about love, but also about whether to acquiesce to the occupying Soviet army or fight back against their presence. In love and in politics, Balász now understands, there’s no pretending anymore. Dans les décombres et les ruines des suites de la guerre, un escroc opportuniste nommé Balász essaie de profiter des autres en se passant pour un ami proche de soldats tués pendant la guerre pour se faire une place dans leurs familles et dans leurs comptes de banque. Il s’agit d’un jeu dangereux et, dans un cas, ses mensonges et ses prétentions le mettent dans un tel pétrin qu’il doit fuir Budapest pour sauver sa peau. Il se fait offrir un abri dans une forêt éloignée, par une femme nommée Judit et son fils. Les supercheries de Balász l’escroc s’estompent lorsqu’il tombe amoureux. Les choses vont bien dans leur aventure passionnée jusqu’à ce que la brute de mari de Judit revient chez lui après le combat. Il faut faire des choix, non seulement en amour, mais à savoir s’il faut acquiescer à l’armée soviétique en occupation ou se battre contre leur présence.
