Good and evil, utopia and dystopia, narrative and post narrative collide in a mortal battle for fun to the public. Sasha Svirsky is a Moscow-based self-taught animator (b.1980). He has developed his own artistic language by mixing media and continues to make graphics artworks, paintings and collages. He works in collaboration with his partner and wife Nadezhda Svirskaia.

My Galactic Twin Galaction

A disaster threatens to destroy everything in its way, but from chaos emerges a glimpse of a new, unknown beginning. In vivid, hand drawn images combined with digital animation techniques, Earthfall is a mesmerizing, symbolic exploration of global politics and an inner journey through how a crisis can transform you. Simone Hooymans is a visual artist and animator born in the Netherlands, who lives and works in Norway. A selected filmography includes Broken Horizon, The Quiet Beauty and When the Icehorn Blows. In 2019 her film All that Space Between Us won the prize for Best animation at Art Quake Kyoto.

Earthfall

Erebeta drives us on a vertical jump above the city. We ricochet on the pavement, twirl around the buildings and pass through streets. This bouncing point of view on modern Japan is accompanied by the traditional Kuroda Bushi music. François Vogel (b. 1971) is a French artist and filmmaker. He creates short films, video installations and photographs. His work is about manipulating the perception of reality, bending our minds with new perspective rules and inviting us to a trip into vision.

Erebeta

Projections combine to develop a rhythmic dialogue exploring the intrinsic relationship between sound and image using 16mm film, paint and a projector. Responding to a hand-drawn soundtrack, each projection is individually created by painting and scratching directly on 16mm film stock. Ross Hogg is an award-winning animation filmmaker based in Edinburgh, who focuses on creating dexterous, hand-crafted animation using a variety of materials, celebrating the vibrancy and physicality of the medium. He works on a freelance basis on a range of projects whilst occasionally teaching at The Glasgow School of Art, and has been honoured by BAFTA Scotland several times.

An escaped laboratory rat navigates through a sea of punctuation. Gina Kamentsky is an experimental animator who creates handmade films by drawing and painting directly onto found film footage. In addition, she collages elements from found film onto the surface. In her work, she explores relationships between surface, rhythm, gesture and field recorded sound. Her animation work has screened at numerous festivals including Annecy, Ottawa International Animation Festival and the Ann Arbor Film Festival.

Trauma Chameleon

Employing the method of single frame editing, primarily focused on sound, the realistic film image transforms into a surreal, structuralist and finally even abstract film. It creates a musical composition while experimenting with the human voice. DONT KNOW WHAT questions classical rules of different film genres by combining elements of avant-garde film/video art and entertainment cinema. Thomas Renoldner (b. 1960) is an Austrian artist, producer, teacher and film historian. He has produced numerous personal experimental and animated films and some commercials, and regularly teaches animation courses at various prestigious institutions.

This experimental animation approaches Hong Kong’s built environment from the conceptual perspective of celluloid film, by applying the technique of film animation to the photographic image. The city’s signature architecture of horizoneclipsing housing estates is reimagined as parallel rows of film strips: Serial Parallels. Max Hattler is a Hong Kong based artist and academic who works with abstract animation, video installation and audiovisual performance. He holds a M.A. from the Royal College of Art, and a Doctorate in fine art from the University of East London. His work has been shown at festivals and institutions worldwide, and he has performed live at various prestigious events. He is an assistant professor at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong.
