The two Best of International Short Film programmes have been hand-picked from other international animation festivals, by the festival's administration. The total of 12 films represents some of the highlights of the international animation scene in the last couple of years.Somehow the Best of International Short Film programme 1 reads like a fairy-tale in itself, self-proclaimed kings, smugglers, drugged authors and fighting forest spirits are all crucial elements of this programme. What more could you want?The techniques stretch from good old stop-mo and multiplane to new and creepy ways to use 2D animation and it all ends up in a flashy and at the same time grotesque 3D animation. But it’s not as frightening as it all sounds, the programme has a good portion of humour, often very dark. Age limit: 15

One windy day, Louis the sheep finds a paper crown and thereby becomes Louis I. King of the Sheep. He addresses his people, tames nature, initiates festivities, separates the sheep by color, and decides who gets to do what. Things go their royal ways. At least until the next gust of wind. Markus Wulf is a director, screenwriter, and playwright from Germany, with a body of work in film, theatre, opera, and puppetry. His short films have won awards at national and international film festivals, his film A Fairytale With A Completely Imagined Ending was nominated for the German national short film award in 2014. In his work, he enjoys using humor as a device to question ideologies and representations of power. He is an alumnus of Columbia University and the IFS, International Film School Cologne, where he received an M.FA. and B.A. He is a participant in the BAFTA newcomers program.

Louis I. King of the Sheep

The steak has been marinating for a few days now. The pan is warm. Franc’s stomach is rumbling. But Liza’s co-workers surprise her with a birthday party. Will she be home on time? Špela Čadež is an animation director and co-founder of Finta Studio in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Her films have received 100+ awards at festivals worldwide and were screened in competition selections such as the Sundance Film Festival, Clermont Ferrand, and Annecy. A passionate advocate for the analogue, Čadež has impressed with films in puppet and cut-out animation techniques. In 2018 Špela was invited to become a member of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Driving along the motorway, Will loses his sense of scale. As his crippling drug addiction deepens, he struggles to unpick the sequence of events that led to his predicament, before he's lost forever. Joseph Pierce is a British filmmaker and animator. Upon graduating from the National Film and Television School he was featured in Screen International’s “Stars of Tomorrow”. His short films have toured internationally, winning over 40 prizes. He’s worked extensively in theatre and live events, including collaborations with the Met Opera NYC, Royal Opera House, and the National Theatre. He’s currently developing his first feature with Melocoton Films.

When a group of rowdy teenagers trek into an isolated forest, they discover peaceful mushroom creatures that turn out to be an unexpected force of nature. Matthew Luhn is a director, writer, and story consultant with over 25 years of experience creating stories and characters at Pixar Animation Studios, The Simpsons, and beyond. Alongside his story work in Hollywood, Matthew also trains companies, organisations, and other professionals on how to craft and tell stories.

Sprite Fright

Once upon a time, there was a sea, the Aral Sea. The sea that has vanished. And along with the sea, seaside life and work disappeared. Only the dead desert terrain remained here, and wrecks of huge fishing boats lying in the sand and people who have been living on the shores of the dry port for years, dreaming of high water and longing to sail at least once again. Joanna Kozuch graduated in fine art studies from the University of Arts, Poznan, and the University of Silesia, Katowice. Now, she is a teacher in the animation department at the Academy of Performing Arts, Bratislava, where she finished her Ph.D. studies.

Once There Was a Sea...

A spirited young woman persuades a hyena from the London Zoo to take her place at a dinner dance held in her honour. Their plan requires a surprising amount of artistry and violence. Based on a story by artist Leonora Carrington, Elizabeth Hobbs celebrates her startling tale with paint and collage. Elizabeth Hobbs is an animated filmmaker based in East London and has been making films for more than 20 years. Her films are experimental in form and often centered upon real-life people or events. They often employ methods from her printmaking background, but always explore and stretch the material possibilities of the medium.

The Debutante

Attempting a backflip is not safe. You can break your neck, land on your head, or land badly on your wrists. None of that is nice, so an avatar does the trick. It practices on a 6-core processor with the help of Machine Learning. The processor is not the newest but still calculates 6 jumps per iteration. One iteration takes one minute, this is 360 jumps in an hour and 8.640 jumps in a day. I wouldn’t be able to jump so much myself. Nikita Diakur is a Russian-born filmmaker based in Germany. He is best known for his projects Ugly and Fest, which have received critical acclaim at film festivals around the world. His signature style is a dynamic computer simulation that embraces spontaneity, randomness, and error.

After losing his fiancée and his good looks in a freak accident, Clyde must confront his inner demon. Balázs Turai is a 37-year-old Hungarian animation director. He co-wrote and co-directed a series adaptation of Voltaire’s Candide, created the web series called Oligarchia, and directed a short sci-fi satire, The Fall of Rome.
