14 professional short films were selected for FAF’s traditional Nordic-Baltic competition program. The films in the Nordic-Baltic competition program are competing for the festival’s Grand Prix, best Nordic-Baltic Short Film, and the audience award.Program 2 is strong on stop-motion and the Eastern perspective of northern Europe and the result is excellent. Strong and well-established short filmmakers present their newest work in this program and on their way there have picked up great recognition and/ or new insight. And for our audience, the films give a multiplane perspective, that takes you on a road trip in space, history, time, identity, and eventually death, all that you expect from good films and animated shorts.

Where are the girls? Unable to find girls in the diverse artwork of the Korean artist Lee Jung-seob, Chaerin Im unravels an imaginative tale of women born with half of their bodies being a horse and a tiger. These roaming women are too fierce and free to match their given role as a daughter, wife, and mother in the patriarchal society. The tale is inspired by the Korean birth dreams (Tae-mong) of her mom when she was pregnant with her twin sister and herself. Chaerin Im (1994, Seoul) is a filmmaker from South Korea with a focus on experimental animation. With the use of craftsmanship and distinctive materials, she explores gender issues and sexual imagery. She graduated from Seoul National University’s Visual Communication Design BFA program (2017) and earned an MFA degree from the CalArts Experimental Animation program (2020). Her films have competed in widely-known festivals such as Annecy, Ann Arbor, Animafest Zagreb, DOK Leipzig, Ottawa, Slamdance, and GLAS. I Am a Horse

My mother died the day I was born. My father was always at war. I was eleven years old when my father forced me to marry an old man. Mohsen Hossaini is a well-respected artist and animator from Afghanistan. He holds a B.A. in film and television directing from College of Iran Television. After receiving his degree, Hossaini worked for various television stations, including Hewad TV, SABA TV (2008-2010) and Afghanistan Radio & Television (2006-2007). Internationally recognized for his animations Shelter (2006) won an award at the Kabul Short Film Festival in 2007 and was screened at the Hiroshima Animation Film Festival 2006, the NAAF Film Festival 2007 in Bosnia as well as the 2007 Leipzig Film Festival. His other short films include Perfume (2009), Hitler (2009) and Solitude (2002). Dance (2014), Red Fish (2018), Event (2019). Mohsen Hossaini arrived in Drøbak as a refugee in September 2015, where he continues his work.

Earthquake

Glenn loves nature. He meets the love of his life while watching birds. They decide to spend their lives in the forest forever, but preferably on their own terms. Anna Erlandsson is a Swedish short film creator, designer, illustrator and animator. In 2004 she won the award for Best short film at Guldbaggegalan, for the animated movie Glenn, the Great Runner, for which she also received the Public choice award at Goteborg International Film Festival.

In the autumn of 2016, hurricane Matthew hit Haiti with full force. It crushed everything in its way and the consequences were worse for those who had the least. Matthew is an animated short doc based on interviews with Haitians, primarily young people on the threshold of adulthood. They talk about their experiences when the hurricane hit the country, and about the future in light of the climate challenges. Trine Vallevik Håbjørg is a Norwegian independent animation filmmaker. She has been exploring different mediums during her career, from animation film via graphic work, photography and screenwriting. She is trained as an animator and photographer educated at the University of Oslo, Volda College, and at The Oslo School of Architecture and Design. The prizewinning animated short documentary, When I hear the birds sing, from 2016 was directed, and written by her. In 2013 she co-founded the independent production company Råsalt together with Øyvind Tangseth. The company does animated short films and commissioned work but is mainly focused on independent artistic work.

Matthew

A woman going through metamorphosis of becoming a mother. Birute, after graduating from Arts University at Bournemouth and Theatre and Music academy, is developing as stop motion animation and theatre artist, who works with different projects, in different countries. Experimenting with live action and animation fusion, currently developing her next short film.

In Perpetuum

Some people believe that the Earth is flat. And then there are those who think that somewhere there, under the Crust of the Earth, another civilization exists. The events of Antipolis take place in the world inside the Earth. Unlike some of the well informed inhabitants of our civilization, the occupants of Antipolis have no idea that they are living inside a gigantic globe. Getting to know this is a sobering shock. Kaspar Jancis has been interested since childhood in drawing comic strips and writing stories for which he made illustrations himself.

Winter 1942. Beyond the Arctic Circle, on the uninhabited island of Trofimovsk in the Laptev Sea, deported people struggle to survive. This is the place chosen by Soviet authorities to deport vast numbers of inhabitants from the occupied Baltic countries, Finland, Ukraine, and elsewhere. In this harsh, alien landscape, man is a mere speck. Against the backdrop of such majestic isolation, many thousands face the savage indifference and cruelty of nature. Always living on the edge, they must find a way to stay alive. All experiences depicted are based on the unfaded memories of those who survived. Gintarė Valevičiūtė-Brazauskienė is a creator of interdisciplinary art. Gintarė is actively involved in creating and curating various art projects and exhibitions. Having completed her postgraduate studies in Art at the Vilnius Academy of the Arts (VAA), she is currently an associate professor in the Academy's Department of Photography, Animation and Media Arts. Gintarė's films and video projects have won awards in international film and media arts festivals. Her film Maskaradas (Masquerade) has been named the best Lithuanian film at the animation festival, “Next Festival.” Antanas Skučas is an animator, director, artist, and participant in various art projects. He lectures at the Vilnius Academy of the Arts and gives workshops and master classes in creative animation technology. His animated films Laimės Žiburys (Beacon/Candle/Lantern of Happiness) (2016) and Grybų Karas (War of the Mushrooms) (2018) were both named Best of Lithuanian Animated Films for their respective years by “Tindirindis,” the International Festival of Animated Films. He created the animated film series Anykščių Krašto Padavimai (Legends from the Region of Anykščiai) and the 12 projections for 2015 Expo Milan for the Lithuanian EXPO pavilion. In 2015 he established a film production company Tylus kinas.
