Canada's submission to the Academy for Best International Feature, Drunken Birds centers around Willy, a Mexican drug-cartel worker, who has made a fatal mistake: falling in love with his boss’s wife, Marlena. Both go into hiding separately, and in an attempt to find his love, Willy travels from Mexico to Canada, where he starts over as a seasonal migrant worker in rural Quebec. Destinies intersect, moments of magic realism arise, worlds collide, and tensions swell amidst the long days of physical labor. Through this, Drunken Birds reveals the humanity at the heart of all work.
