Emma, a 35-year-old woman, beaten by her abusive husband, escapes her house during the night with her 5-year-old daughter, Chloe. She manages to get rescued by the emergency services and is sent to a shelter for female victims of domestic violence. In this center, Emma is going to meet several women from very different backgrounds in the same situation as her. These women, often broken and drifting, attempt to take back control of their lives, but the road of recovery is still long, and they have to deal with many questions and obstacles. They often have to deal with the fear of their former partner, economic difficulties, battle for the custody of their children, and other legal problems.

Through all the experiences Emma has, she is torn between staying with her husband or leaving him and pressing charges. She is lost, she does not have the means to live by herself and take care of her daughter, she does not want her daughter to live without having a father, and she is scared to press charges against her husband and cause him troubles. Her own mother advises her to stay with him for the sake of the family, to sacrifice herself for her family.

In the end, despite all the difficulties, Emma must choose herself, divorce her husband, and press charges against him for the sake of her daughter.
