At Orcalab - a remote land-based research station, on Hanson Island, British Columbia, Canada - Helena Symonds has been listening to the sounds of Orca for over forty years.


Director Biography - Megan Hockin-Bennett 


Megan Hockin-Bennett is a Natural History documentary filmmaker based on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Born in Britain, after graduating with a degree in film production Megan has worked across multiple disciplines in the film industry since 2014. Working with clients such as National Geographic, CNN, Disney, and the BBC she has traveled around the globe on projects in Africa, England, Iceland, Canada, Scotland, and Wales.


She has spent the last 10 years working with Orcalab during the summer months capturing unique audio and video content of Orca and Humpback whales for use in research and film-making outreach projects. A keen scuba diver she has participated in the growth of Orcalab’s remote hydrophone and camera network in partnership with explore.org. 


She is continuously learning and growing her skill in capturing the unique works of Orcalab and thrives to create strong visual storytelling with a conservation-based message. 


Today, she is a vital part of the Orcalab operation and her work continues to grow Orcalab’s online audience bringing the beauty of the Johnstone Strait and the lives of the whales into the homes of people across the globe to promote a better understanding and respect for mother nature.
