‘Emoji’ is a Japanese word that means ‘picture character,’ and knowing that will give you a good idea of what this film is all about. Having become a global phenomenon over the past two decades, some experts argue that all those smiling turds and heart-eyed faces are becoming a language of their own. But who, if anyone, is in charge of this new global digital language? After this thought-provoking and engaging documentary, you’ll never look at another emoji, or think of language itself, in the same way again.

Official Selection–Tribeca, HotDocs, and AFI Docs Film Festivals
