Martin McGuinness was a controversial figure who divided opinion. But he was also a skilled negotiator who brought people together. This new feature documentary traces Martin

McGuinness’ life from his early days defending the Bogside, to his days defending the Peace Process. We hear testimonies from friends, opponents, colleagues and Martin himself, as we trace his unique and eventful life.

The film includes new and exclusive interviews with the people who knew and worked with Martin McGuinness. Nell McCafferty and Terry Crossan recount stories of living in Derry during the 60’s and 70’s. His colleagues from Sinn Fein tell exclusive stories of working with him, and how he steered the Sinn Fein party in the North towards the peace that exists today. Journalist Peter Taylor recollects Martin McGuinness being identified to him by John Hume in the early 1970’s as someone he should watch. Johnathan Powell, The Labour Party Negotiator, recalls Martin’s unique ability to get people to engage and fight his side. Tony Blair remarks on the strong sense of duty he had towards all the people of Ireland. David Trimble and Ian Paisley Jr tell of the distrust that the Unionist people had towards Martin McGuinness, but then had to accept that the road to Peace necessitated working with McGuinness. Included also in this film is Martin McGuinness’s last interview before his death in 2017.

Martin McGuinness was a public figure for over 40 years. He started as a revolutionary, then became a politician, eventually going on to hold the office of Deputy First Minister for almost a decade. This film gives a rare insight into one man’s incredible journey from a terraced house in a rundown part of Derry, to being the man who helped bring peace and a representative government to this troubled corner of Ireland.

This is a bilingual, Irish/English language film. landmark documentary by LIGID Léiriúcháin commissioned for TG4, S4C with support from the BAI and the ILBF.
