Dr. Jeff Hoffman was the first Jewish American male astronaut to fly into space. He brought a small Torah scroll on board Space Shuttle Columbia and while orbiting Earth, he read from the book of Genesis, “In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.” Having the Torah with him symbolized the importance of bringing the holiness of human life into space.
