Ecometropolis: A Film Series on Land, Water, Memory & Resistance Wednesdays, May 28 – June 18 | 5:30 PM ET Join us for Ecometropolis, a powerful four-week film series exploring the intersection of environment, race, memory, and place through a mix of short and feature-length films. Each screening will be followed by a conversation with the filmmaker, director, or a featured voice from the film, offering an intimate look into the stories behind the screen. From Black cities battling environmental neglect to Native Hawaiian communities protecting sacred lands, Ecometropolis brings together poetic, personal, and political narratives that reimagine our relationships to land, water, and one another. Featured Films: Freshwater – Directed by dream hampton A lyrical short film about a disappearing Black city, flooded basements, and the fluid nature of memory. Holding Back the Tide – Directed by Jaiko Celka A hybrid documentary tracing the oyster’s deep-rooted role in New York’s past and present—told through queer myth, biology, and environmental restoration. Standing Above the Clouds – Directed by Jalena Keane-Lee A moving portrait of Native Hawaiian families standing in defense of Mauna Kea, confronting colonialism and protecting sacred ground across generations. Razing Liberty Square – Directed by Katja Esson Set in Miami, this film follows residents of Liberty Square as they face a new kind of racial injustice—climate gentrification—on the city’s highest and driest ground. Together, these films ask: Who gets to survive? Who gets to stay? And how do we resist erasure—of communities, ecosystems, and histories?
