Beethoven’s Ninth was the first symphony in history to be accompanied by words — about love and freedom, hope, humanity, and peace. It is a symphony hoping for a time when the world can finally recognize the love and ideals that make life worth living. It was written both as a love letter to all of humankind and at the same time as a powerful protest piece. Are we there yet?
