As a child of the 1950s and ’60s, I don’t recall ever seeing a family comedy featuring people of color. I never questioned why there were no bright, beautiful, happy little brown boys and girls on the children’s and family shows we all loved. I just watched and laughed. The story, sounds, and images in this film, though reimagined, are drawn from my childhood — from a time when there were only three TV channels and families across America watched the same shows together in their living rooms, and laughed.
