Beneath the Surface Collection GBFF2024 "Life, love, and identity; so complex, yet so beautiful"
Bath (2019)
Discussions about sexuality and politics during a weekend away in Bath prove to Nick and Ella that despite their six years together, they don’t have it all figured out. Bath was filmed in London and was done entirely using improvised dialogue.
Director Biography - Meredith Dobbs
Director Biography - Meredith Dobbs
Meredith is a writer, director, and editor (and sometimes producer) based in New York and London. She has made four short films and is working on a fifth. When not making indie shorts, she works freelance as an editor.
Please tell us your motivation for making your film:
I identified as asexual for close to a decade, and when I was in a hetero relationship, I felt like I had a foot in two worlds: ace and hetero. When I described these feelings to a bisexual friend, she saw so many similarities between my experience and her story of coming out as bi to her then boyfriend. So we wrote a screeplay together about invisible queerness.
What is the theme of your submission?:
Bisexuality, invisible queerness
What was the message you wanted to convey with this project?:
You're still queer even if you don't look like it from the outside. Queerness is something you determine for yourself, not something that has to be proven to others.
Any further comments about your submission:
This film was made entirely in improv dialogue. I wrote a screenplay structure, and actors improved all of their dialogue on set.
