Structured as a journey, ‘Heiopei’ is a surreal escape from the monotony and grief of life in lock-down. Imagined characters wander through an emotional anti-realist fairy-tale landscape, where the familiar and the naïve provide the backdrop to scenes of spirit-possession, metamorphosis, restraint and release.
In this multi-disciplinary film digital and analogue techniques are combined. Every single element- be it drawing, collage, animation, painting and the making of digital protagonists – is created from scratch. All content, including the music was written and performed by Susanne Deeken in her studio in London.

NOISE MACHINE

"Our America" is a short-form, non-narrative meditation on American 20th century industrial promises gone awry. The film explores the dreams of World War II America through imagery based on 1943 teacher aid posters called Our America which were distributed to schools throughout the U.S. From the vantage point of nearly a century later, the film examines how the innocent, celebratory intent of American ingenuity has led us on a path of unintended consequences.

Take Me Back to Earth

The Nightmare is a stop motion animation inspired by the Dunhuang fresco entitled Mara’s Attack, and captures the silent struggles of mental illness.
The tale unfolds over three chapters…
“The Dancer” follows the anxiety of a dancer about her appearance. The harder she pursues outward beauty and perfection, the more cracked and fissured her face becomes.
“Phobia” is a glimpse into the Horseman’s unease and fear of being exposed to social activity.
“Insomnia” is the wakeful dream of a depressed insomniac.
This project is an interdisciplinary study of ceramics, animation techniques, and the Dunhuang frescoes; It explores the bridge between traditional depictions in the frescoes and contemporary stories of everyday life.

The Nightmare

A surreal dream-like impression of High School, and the inherent horrific absurdity in these american public education institutions. Symbols of obsolescence and militaristic propaganda are juxtaposed over decaying school architecture, flavored with a moldy psychedelia. An abstracted floating tour through the campus of dead ideas. Patriarchy spectacularly crumbles under it's own rotten bankruptcy.
