Director Statement
As an independent filmmaker, I’ve come to understand that a film project is never the work of one person alone. It’s a collective effort where every team member contributes their talent, vision, and passion. On Dead Bloom, I had the incredible experience of co-writing and directing with my oldest son, which brought both personal and professional dynamics into sharp focus. Filmmaking is challenging, but it’s also deeply rewarding.
As co-directors, our roles were to inspire. To lead by example and push the limits of what those around us think is possible. When you can bring out the best in your collaborators, the project elevates in ways that transcend the sum of its parts. We believe in creating an environment where everyone feels empowered to contribute, where their voices are heard and their craft is honored.
Dead Bloom is a testament to this philosophy. While it’s rooted in the horror genre, we aimed to create a film that explores much deeper, more universal themes. At its heart, Dead Bloom is about the effects of ancestral legacy—particularly for people of color, and the reverberations of past actions that influence future generations. Through the lens of experimentation, we crafted a narrative that dives into the psychological and physical toll of legacy, and how the horrors of the past can continue to haunt us. This is not just a film about survival, it’s a story of resilience, of uncovering truths that span generations, and of the indomitable human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity.
