In July 2020, the Kuma River flooded, which is called2020 Kyushu floods.” The Hitoyoshi-Kuma region suffered devastating damage. Shinji Aoki, Professor Emeritus at Toyo University, who has been committed to green tourism in Kumamoto Prefecture since 2004, created a picture book titled "The River Overflowed! The Day the Town Sinks" to preserve the events of this disaster for future generations. This book caught the eye of Kazufumi Oki, director of the TV drama series "Oshin," and he and Aoki decided to make a film together. The film depicts what the people of the Hitoyoshi-Kuma region, who are still suffering from the scars of the flood, feel from the "whispers" of the Kuma River and how they can use them as a source of hope for the future.

Takeo Nakahara, a native of Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto, plays the protagonist, Takayuki Imanishi. Although Takayuki is taciturn and mysterious, Nakahara also expresses the air of inclusion and passion of Takayuki, who the people of the town can confide their worries to. Misa Shimizu plays Takayuki's ex-girlfriend, Yukiko Yamashina, who doesn’t give up until the end, while Koichi Miura plays her husband, Koichi Yamashina, who has given up telling what he feels to his wife.

Yuta Watanabe sensitively plays Takayuki's son, Fuminori, who resents his father for abandoning him when he was seven years old but gradually opens up to him, and a former member of an idol group, AKB48, Ayana Shinozaki, plays Fuminori's former classmate, Juri Nakagawa, who learns about the charms of her hometown from scratch as a member of a regional revitalization project.

Other supporting cast members include Michie Terada as Takayuki's mother, Kazue, and Yoshiko Miyazaki and Mansaku Fuwa as the couple next door.

<Plot>

Six months after the 2020 Kyushu floods,” Takayuki Imanishi, who heard the news of his mother's death, steps into his hometown for the first time in 22 years and sees his hometown completely changed, with mountains eroded, many houses washed away, and even the river's landscape completely changed. Takayuki is reunited with his son, Fuminori, whom he had not seen for 22 years. Fuminori is training to become a boatman for the Kuma River boat, which is Takayuki's previous job, but he is reluctant to open up to his father, who abandoned him as a child. Fuminori sees his relation with his former classmate, Juri Nakagawa, who has returned to Kumamoto as part of a local revitalization project launched within the airline company she works for, as a reflection of his father's past.

Yukiko, the proprietress of the long-established inn, "Hitoyoshi Mikazukiso," and Takayuki's former lover, tries to somehow restore the inn, which has been half-destroyed, but her husband, Koichi, who is Takayuki's childhood friend, has not spoken to her since he saw his father being swallowed up by the mud before his eyes.

Takayuki's neighbor, Naohiko Yokotani, decides to move out of the temporary housing at the request of his wife, Satomi, but...
