Filmmaker Marta Monteiro had intended to make a comedy as her next project but when writer Joana Estrela presented her with a short story titled Soup, Marta knew that this would be her next film.


In this conversation with Festival Director Marina Antunes, Marta shares how Joana’s story inspired her new film Cold Soup and highlights the recurring motifs of water and drowning, emphasizing their role as emotional symbols throughout the film and how the final line of the movie serves as a poignant encapsulation of a woman’s journey.


Cold Soup was selected in competition at SPARK ANIMATION 2023.

Marta Monteiro

Marta Monteiro was born in Penafiel in 1973. Studied Fine Arts - Sculpture and Drawing.


After a few years teaching she now works as an illustrator and film director. She Collaborates with newspapers, magazines and publishers all around the world, such as The New York Times and Pato Lógico. Marta directed two animation short films Independência de Espírito (2011), produced by Sardinha em Lata, and A Sonolenta (2017), produced by Animais, which won several awards including Best Portuguese Film/ Vasco Granja Award 2018, at Monstra - Lisbon Animated Film Festival.


Cold Soup is her most recent animated short, a production by Animais in co-production with La Clairière (France).

Marina Antunes

Marina has been writing and discussing film for over 15 years, first on a personal blog, followed by a decade-long tenure on the now retired Row Three. In 2008, she joined the writing staff at Quiet Earth, becoming Editor-In-Chief in 2014, a role she still holds. Over the years, she has also produced and hosted a number of podcasts including Before the Dawn, a long-running podcast on the Twilight franchise, Girls on Pop, a podcast on film and popular entertainment from women’s perspective and After the Credits, bi-monthly film podcast with nearly 300 episodes.


Marina is a member of ACM and ACM SIGGRAPH, the Online Film Critics Society, the Alliance of Women Film Journalists, and the Visual Effects Society. She is the President of Spark CG Society and the Vancouver ACM SIGGRAPH chapter. She has also served on juries for several film festivals including DOXA, St. Louis International Film Festival, and the Whistler Film Festival. She joined the Spark CG Society in 2014.
