Cherokee elders, like Rebecca Jim, believe that what happens to the water happens to us. Without it, we cannot move culture forward and we cannot exist here. ᏗᏂᏠᎯ ᎤᏪᏯ (Meet Me at the Creek) tells a story of interconnectedness and Cherokee values through the lifelong fight of Rebecca Jim, a Cherokee Nation citizen and Waterkeeper Warrior, as she leads the effort to restore Tar Creek located in Miami, Oklahoma. U.S. government officials have designated Tar Creek as “irreversibly damaged,” but Rebecca refuses to accept that.

There’s always been only a few special places in the world where wild rice (known as manoomin to the Ojibwe people), grows. Which made it troubling when manoomin stopped growing in the early 2000’s at Spur Lake, a 113 acre lake in Oneida County, Wisconsin. A group of conservation partners have come together to bring wild rice back to Spur Lake because of its environmental and cultural importance.

In 2020, a group of Canadian scientists and Indigenous elders wrote a paper “Towards Reconciliation: 10 Calls to Action to Natural Scientists Working in Canada” to facilitate and enable reconciliation, rebalance relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians, and to create a path forward based on mutual respect. Signal Fire is a 30-minute documentary that takes the themes and ideas included in the original paper and reframes them into a story featuring those who are igniting change and lighting the way for others looking to make a difference.
