Nool is an exploration of the ongoing loss and creation of identity that young immigrants face, and the impacts this can have on mental health. This animated short follows the story of an 11-year-old girl as she immigrates from Sri Lanka to Canada. Nool, which means thread in Tamil, represents her connection to her culture, family and identity at home in Sri Lanka. After struggling with her cultural identity and sense of self for years, she learns to appreciate her background, allowing her to carefully unweave the complex parts of herself.
By Ayesha Azad, one of the three filmmakers awarded our Get Reel Emerging Filmmaker Scholarship.
