This short film focuses on the initial stages of transition, the moments of realization, and the courage it takes for a little pirate girl to simply be herself.

Director Biography - Monica Cox

Monica is a queer filmmaker interested in telling intimate stories about connection between characters and with oneself. She completed her Filmmaking Certificate from NFTS and has an MA in Theatremaking from Carlos III University in Madrid. In Theatre she has directed sell out February Face at the Old Red Lion and winner of FesTeLoff Ripped at the Seams at the Bush Studio.

Please tell us your motivation for making your film:

In Situ was born out of a need to present female queer intimacy and voice. The question of who has right to space which the characters face is directly contextualised with with other current themes of how female homosexuality doesn’t have so much of an accepted space for intimacy in society.

What is the theme of your submission?:

Love, intimacy, space, visibility

What was the message you wanted to convey with this project?:

The film explores the universal themes of belonging and human connection within the wider context of current themes such as lesbian visibility.

Any further comments about your submission:

Telling a lesbian love story with the female gaze is such an important aspect of ensuring representation and visibility which is so needed. We fought to make this production with an all female/non-binary cast and crew because we value celebrating the creativity and talent of these filmmakers but also because it plays such a crucial aspect in how this love story is told.
