The films in this block explore the ways that we are in continuous rhythm and harmony with the ancestors.

North Carolina Poet Laureate, Jaki Shelton Green, paints moving, vivid, and poignant pictures of the complexities of the African American experience with her audio poems. Jaki visited the grove of trees in which an ancestor had been lynched, inspiring this poem brought to life through film.

I Wanted to Ask the Trees

An isolated Black woman mentally –– and physically –– struggles against the news of COVID-19 and police brutality she sees online. An experimental adaptation of the Book of Ecclesiastes.

Under the Sun After the Wind

Imprenta is a short dance film written and directed by Junadry Leocaria. Together with visual artist Richard Kofi and musician Ernest Guiraud Cissé she explores the journeys of her ancestors, reaches out for spiritual connection using movement, music, poetry, and symbolism. Finding nothing less then a home within for all of them. Cinematography by Conni Trommlitz, made with the support of Korzo Dance Theatre, The Hague.

"The Communion of White Dresses" is a choreographic work set to the poetry of the NC Poet Laureate, Jaki Shelton Green. The piece marries dance, drama, and musical accompaniment while pulling back the veil on the effects of religion and the role it plays in the identity-based oppression of young black girls. The poem, The Communion of White Dresses, is a part of an audio anthology and larger film titled "The River Speaks of Thirst,” which documents real accounts of the complexities of the African American experience, past and present. Dr. Kristi V. Johnson, Director of Dance at North Carolina Central University, directed the dance film and was a co-choreographer with Jaylun Moore, the featured soloist.

The Communion of White Dresses

Assaman is a cosmic twin love story with the future. A man named Tukki meets a sky-being named Asé. Together, they become suspended in a visual and sonic examination in search of flourishing joy and self-care. What may seem a simple love story quickly expands into a kaleidoscope of introspective, interconnected and intergenerational movement and moments. Assaman holds you for 14 minutes in an Afrofuturist and Indigenous sonic vision - a hypnotic journey. Assaman means "the sky" in Wolof.

FLOWERS is an afro-futuristic fairytale of love, following a ceremony of a mother giving away her son. Our protagonist is gifted with a heavy crown by his mother to the disappointment of his overlooked brothers. A crown of glory. A crown that comes with a mission and a price. This is a story about the deep, transformative power of love, a story about family, purpose, and realizing one’s destiny. Flowers reimagines what a black fairy tale would look and feel like, adopting references to classic Disney stories from the 1930s-50s and modernizing tropes for this whimsical coming-of-age tale.
