German-born Hendrik Schäfer has lived in the Netherlands, South Africa, Argentina, and, since 2014, Israel. After working as a freelance production manager for commercials and music promos, he turned his hand to documentary filmmaking. Double Income, Kids grew out of “the deep longing to become fathers” he unexpectedly observed among the gay community in Israel. “Growing up as a gay man in Berlin,” he says, “the natural assumption was the belief you would be childless your entire life. In Tel Aviv, I was confronted by a very different assumption.”
