The late Bruno Ganz shines in his very last role, that of Gunther Goldschmidt – now George Goldsmith – “a very boring man,” reluctantly being interviewed by his combative son about Gunther and his wife’s lives as Jewish musicians in Nazi Germany. Based on The Inextinguishable Symphony: A True Story of Music and Love in Nazi Germany by Goldsmith’s son, Martin, Winter Journey sets his parents’ love affair against the improbable story of the Gestapo-controlled Jewish Cultural Association, or Jüedischer Kulturbund, that, from 1933-1941, allowed German Jews full artistic expression among themselves, even while completely banning them from greater Germany’s cultural life.
