"It was the smartest stupid thing we did," Lois Dodd says of the three-floor building she acquired with two other artists—Eleanor Munro and Louise Kruger—on East 2nd Street in New York in 1959. "Artists in Residence" is a documentary about art, motherhood, sacrifice and community. It's a story told through the voices of women who made space for their creative lives on their own terms—and the children they raised along the way. At its heart, it's a story about balance, self-perseverance, and community. What began as conversations inside the walls of that three-story walk-up has now moved audiences across the country, and no matter where we screen it, we find that our audiences—young and old—see themselves in this story. It's a narrative everyone relates to, no matter their circumstances.
