In 1980, Big John Birges built an ingenious boobie-trapped ticking time bomb, filled it with 1,000 pounds of dynamite, and successfully wheeled it in the front doors of Harvey’s Wagon Wheel Casino in Lake Tahoe. But that’s about all that went right for Big John. His $3 million extortion scheme was derailed at every turn and ultimately blown to pieces when the FBI accidentally detonated the bomb inside, blowing a 5-story hole in the side of the building. What followed was one of the largest bomb investigations in American history.
