Julie, 50s, has just lost her father and is trying to figure out how to live up to his legacy as a civil rights attorney and activist for equity. Meanwhile, Will, also 50s, has just finalized his divorce and is struggling to figure out who he is now that everything that’s ever defined him is gone. They each go on a hike in the spiritual town of Sedona, to ponder their lives, where they meet at the trailhead and decide to hike together. The two characters connect when they discover that Will is a civil rights lawyer, just like Julie’s dad was, and not only did he know her father, he admired him deeply. Julie is touched by Will’s show of emotion at learning of her father’s passing.

On the hike, they help each other heal as they talk about the fears most people have in our world today: injustice, AI, income inequality, equity for women and LGBTQ+ people, spirituality, the impermanence of life, and the betterment of society. Their conversation is so fun and inspiring, they realize they want this relationship to continue, but they live on opposite sides of the country, and neither is able to move. Nonetheless, they make plans to dine together, but then Will gets an emergency call from his daughter and suddenly runs off, without sharing phone numbers or last names.

Julie is sad that she’ll never see him again. But Will is determined to reconnect, possibly with a little help from Julie’s father in the sky.
