Nearest Neighbours interweaves the stories of four main sets of characters: a journalist; a couple with three young children and their abuela; a woman who is living in a horse stable among other refugees; and a computer engineer turned construction worker and his family.

Alexandr and Vladimir travel thousands of miles from their home to heal. These two Ukrainian children were exposed to radiation resulting from the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Together with other 26,000 children, also affected by radiation, they arrive in the city of Tarará in Cuba where a full recovery program for the victims is organized.
