Garifuna Heritage: HFF celebrates Garifuna heritage with a pair of films set in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

YURUMEIN (Homeland) recounts the painful past of the Caribs, a little known indigenous group from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent: their near extermination at the hands of the British, the decimation of their culture on the island, and the exile of survivors to Central America. The film also captures the powerful moment of homecoming when Caribs from the Diaspora visit the island for the first time. They come hoping to reconnect with the spirit of their ancestors and to locate any remaining descendants. What they find is a legacy of genocide and slavery. What happens when a dislocated people begin to reckon with a painful history and attempt to revitalize a disappeared culture? The film reveals signs of resilience as local Vincentians -- some with Carib ancestry, some without -- come together for the first time to explore, celebrate and honor their heritage, and in doing so, begin the journey of rebuilding a homeland.
