Founded in 2010, The Emerging Lens Film Festival is a production of The Charles Taylor Theatre and Media Arts Association. After an argument with his sister about her choice of boyfriend, a young Black man spends the day blowing off steam, striking a psychological blow to a white male after believing he is being profiled—an encounter that becomes much more after he discovers that his target is closer than he could ever expect.

Lauren, a sex trade worker in Toronto, returns to her small rural Christian African Nova Scotian community after a five-year absence. Unable to cope with the judgment of her mother and the hopeful expectations of her 8-year-old child, she plans to stay in her grandmother’s empty house. But her mother has sold the house to a middle-aged white woman. Lauren, ready for a confrontation, visits the house and is surprised by what she finds there.

I’ve never been this close to a coloured person before… is based on the true story of an innocent outing unexpectedly infused with an inconceivable intercultural impropriety. Filmmaker/spoken word artist Asna Adhami takes poetic license to draw back the curtain on this incredible moment of racialization to unpack the baggage of centuries of segregation and colonialist legacies loaded into a single moment, by revealing the emotional underbelly after effects of microaggressions (microaggressions of macro consequences, that is)—from the perspective of the unsuspecting who experience such things.&nbsp; Asna gracefully manages to unpack and lay bare the baggage of centuries of segregation and colonialist legacies loaded into a single moment, like all such moments that require careful and delicate navigation for safe passage. Her elegant exploration is poignant and understandably uncomfortable, and is the basis of her upcoming documentary.&nbsp;
