Director Statement

“A film professor of mine always said, ‘the best work is personal work.’ Growing up, I spent six days a week for sixteen years in a Southern Baptist mega church. Though I still have my faith, (something that never really leaves) there is plenty to accurately criticize about this community and lifestyle. I say ‘accurately’ because there is so much inaccuracy to how this community is portrayed in film and television. I’ve had cerebral palsy my entire life, Being part of a Southern Baptist community, there was an emphasis on healing through faith. Maybe if you have enough faith, God would heal you. This lead to broken promises and hearts. Looking back, I have empathy for these people. Some were abusive but, others were just trying to find meaning and love in life.

Aesthetically, I wanted my film to feel like if Carl Dreyer made an episode of "Twilight Zone." Though this film has serious and personal themes, I do want it to function as a genre piece as well. In response to my professor, though personal work is best… Personal work is personal work.”
